Me vs 50 Young Women

I’ll get to the subject line in a second...But hello everybody!!!
I had a pretty great week overall. It’s rained from Monday to Sunday, so needless to say everything here soaking wet, lol. Heck it even ice rained one day! Pretty Gnarly.

Here are 2 experiences I had this week!;

1) Last week our ward mission leader in Celina told us that there are 3 girls in the YW who aren’t members who consistently come to church each week. Their biological parents passed away and some member of the church, the Cook family, adopted all 3 of them. For the past 6 months they’ve attended church, and even seminary. The Cooks are hesitant to have them taught by the missionaries and don’t want to force that decision on them so our WML thought it’d be a great idea to have us teach all of the young women the first missionary lesson and see if that might spark something from the 3 Cook girls who would be listening. Well long story short Elder Laris couldn’t help me teach because he was all the way in Sherman (an hour North). So I was the only missionary. Honestly,  it’s not too nerve racking to speak to the aaronic priesthood but this was a whole other bull ride, literally 50 YW.  For about 40 minutes I taught the restoration trying to keep these girls as engaged in the lesson as I knew how. By the end the mood was pretty right and the girls were a lot more open than the beginning, but I still felt like there was a whole lot more I coulda done to get the girls involved. The funny thing was the young women president came up afterwords and was stunned. She had never seen the YW so engaged in a lesson. She wanted me and my companion to come again over the next couple weeks! primarily so we can teach the 3 non-member cook girls, but secondary get the YW more excited about missionary work and maybe one day serving a mission. So It ended up being a good experience!

2) On Saturday we were invited out by some members to eat at Dickeys BBQ. So we showed up, walked inside and before I even had to look I heard a sound that I hadn’t heard in months...BRAAAP! To the left of me there was a big screen TV that had super cross on! As most of you know I love riding dirt bikes, raced a little bit, and have been to several super cross events in SLC. As a missionary you’re not supposed to watch regular Tv, Radio, etc etc. Now I’ve been exposed to plenty of gas station radio stations, and other restaurants TV’s but I swear to you I have never been so tempted to watch a TV in my entire life than while I was in this Dickeys BBQ. For the entire hour I had to consciously fight the temptation to watch the TV. It was on my mind the entire time I was there, it was a bit ridiculous haha. I want to do my best to obey all of the rules in the white handbook and I knew that if I were to give in to this temptation that I would lose the spirit that night. A missionary without the spirit is worth just about nothing. Satan knows that and will constantly tempt us with our weakness’. BUT I am proud to say that I didn’t watch any bit of it!!! Not one second of Super cross was watched!  This probably sounds silly to some but the way I look at it is God gives us commandments and expects us to obey them. Regardless of our situation. If Satan can get us to allow ourselves to break “smaller” commandments than that just opens the door for us to eventually break “larger” commandments. I haven’t seen any immediate blessings come from that act of obedience but If anything it was a testimony builder to me that I can obey all of Gods commandments, no matter my circumstance. This experience reminds me of something a crazy guy told me once in Rockwall, Tx. He said Sin does 3 things;

1) Costs you more than you intended to spend

2) Keeps you longer than you intended to stay

3) Takes you further than you intended to go

The key word there in intended

When we sin we put our trust in Satan and his “promises” rather than God’s. My invitation is to keep every commandment. Even the silly ones, because in the long run those make up the difference. I love each and every one of you! Thank you for the constant support! :) Have great weeks!
